"There are several meanings in this piece. Trees take a long time to grow, kind of like humans. I portray myself in this piece of art. The big eye represents the tension of living in the present. The small eye represents being intimidated by what you are seeing. The eye near the top facing the side is looking forward to the future. It doesn’t have a mouth because I couldn’t speak English when I came to the United States in 2010 and I felt like I was growing like a tree, but I was not able to express myself 100%. The roots of a tree grow towards the water source trying to grab whatever is close to it to get nourishment, like me trying to get help in whatever direction I could find it to grow. At the same time, I was holding my own heart full of emotions and feelings while time kept ticking by, and I still couldn’t speak English. The lightbulb represents advice my aunt gave me. She told me that I was going to face so many obstacles and find so many distractions, but I needed to follow the light, have one goal, and keep moving towards that one goal."
