INTERVIEW

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Rigo Ortiz, a pop contemporary artist based in San Antonio.

How long have you been creating art?

I've been doing art pretty much all my life. More significantly, I started taking art classes in middle school and high school, trying to see what I could do with it.

In school, there was always some kind of format that you needed to follow, and I wasn't really interested in that. I just wanted to do my own stuff. I started doing it more professionally after college, doing pop-ups and group shows, validating the idea that I could do this as more than just a hobby.

Can you share a bit about your process?

My process starts with whatever I am thinking about. If I feel it will be an interesting concept, I'll draw something on Procreate and begin to think about how I can create this illustration.

Today, since I've been working primarily with woodcuts, I tend to work as I go. I've been using my CNC machine to get my cuts, and then I assemble my piece, prep, and spray paint. From there, it's just making sure everything looks good.

What are you working on right now?

I am currently working on a new body of work for a solo show at 1301 Gallery. It will consist of my old and new styles, primarily multi-medium artwork, such as sculptures or canvas pieces.

One of the new concepts includes incorporating a traditional format but working with a multi-level die-cut to add more depth. This keeps things familiar yet provides a different take.

Can you share a bit more about your upcoming solo show.

I will be doing a variety of new sizes of previous pieces, allowing me to play with scale and make my artwork more affordable. I believe it's important to create art that anyone can purchase.

Final Words?

Last words: continue to pursue what you love. Sometimes, it might be difficult, but gather around people who appreciate what you do, appreciate your work, uplift you, and validate what you are doing. Do what you love, and continue to create.
